Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group aims to boost the number of users for Laiwang, its instant-messaging app, to 100 million from the current one million, a company spokesperson said in an email to Hong Kong Economic Journal’s EJ Insight. The spokesperson did not specify the exact timeframe for achieving that target. In the past, Alibaba had relied mainly on connections among peer groups to promote Laiwang but now it intends to have a large-scale promotion, the official said, without revealing the planned marketing expenditure. Laiwang, which is said to compete with Tencent Holdings’ (00700.HK) WeChat, is seeking to boost its user number to 10 million in the short term, the spokesperson said. Alibaba’s chief executive Jonathan Lu held a grand launch ceremony for Laiwang on Sept. 23.
