Beijing public buildings to pay for more energy use, paper says

Public buildings in Beijing will pay progressively higher rates for utilities such as electricity and water under a tiered pricing system designed to conserve resources, Beijing News reported Tuesday, citing a draft plan posted for public consultation on the municipal government’s website. The government will cap energy consumption for each public building and order public disclosure of the facilities’ energy use and efficiency, it said. Fines of as much as 100,000 yuan (US$16,267) could be imposed if quotas are exceeded.
