Japan passes on leaders’ summit with China at APEC, Kyodo says

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has decided not to seek talks with President Xi Jinping {習近平} on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Indonesia on Monday because an invitation would not change China’s stance against such a meeting, Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday, citing Japanese government sources. Abe will also not meet Premier Li Keqiang {李克強} at the leaders’ summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held after APEC. Most Japanese officials say it will be difficult to hold the annual trilateral leaders’ summit this year with China and South Korea as tensions persist, the report said.
