Taiwan expects 40% fewer cross-strait group tourists, paper says

The number of mainland tourists visiting Taiwan in groups during the National Day holiday is expected to be about 20,100, or around 40 percent fewer than the 33,927 recorded a year earlier, the Commercial Times reported Wednesday, citing statistics from the island’s tourism bureau. The dip is seen as partly due to a new mainland tourism law that took effect on Tuesday to clamp down on hidden tour costs. The law is expected to push up group tour charges so many mainlanders opted to visit Taiwan in September, with 35,000 more making the cross-strait trip compared with a year earlier, the report said.
