Taiwan’s Miaoli Motor Transportation Co., Ltd. has ordered three K9 electric buses from the local unit of mainland carmaker BYD Co. Ltd. (01211.HK, 002594.CN) after the island’s Vehicle Safety Certification Center awarded the manufacturer an operating license, Taiwan’s Apple Daily reported Thursday, without citing any source. BYD is also set to win orders for 10 of the buses from one of the island’s universities. The electric bus business is expected to benefit Taiwan Solar Energy Co. Ltd., which has invested in the development of the K9 and owns 49 percent of the unit. Only three domestic firms make electric buses in Taiwan, and the government is expected to phase out all of its 6,200 diesel buses by 2022, creating business opportunities for manufacturers, the report said.
