China is clamping down on the waste recycling industry, which has helped Western countries dispose of their trash but has added to the degradation of the country’s environment, Business Times reported Friday. Authorities have ordered strict enforcement of standards for waste imports after the central government decided too many were unusable or even dangerous and would end up in its landfills, according to the newspaper. Under the “Green Fence” campaign, the government rejected hundreds of containers of waste it said were contaminated or that improperly mixed different types of scrap. The crackdown is abruptly changing a multibillion-dollar global industry in which China is a major processing center for the world’s discarded softdrink bottles, scrap metal, electronics and other materials, the report said.
