US, Japan to ink new defense guidelines by end-2014, report says

The ministers of national defense and foreign affairs of the United States and Japan said in a joint statement after a meeting Thursday that they agreed to sign new defense cooperation guidelines, a revised version of the one signed in 1997, by the end of 2014 , Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Japanese media. Under the pact, the US will support Japan to jointly exercise rights of self-defense. Meanwhile, the officials expressed concern over the development of China’s military power and suggested that they should push Beijing to enhance military transparency and abide by international rules on marine actions, the report said.
