China to build air pollution monitoring network, Xinhua says

China will build a nationwide network within three to five years to monitor the impact of air pollution on health, the latest step to deal with the persistent smog in big cities, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday. A total of 43 monitoring spots will be set up in 16 provinces and municipalities frequently engulfed by smog to facilitate research on air pollutants in different regions, the impact on the health of vulnerable groups and study of related diseases, Xu Dongqun, an official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was quoted sa saying.  The study, which will be funded by the central government, will also seek ways to reduce PM2.5 or tiny airborne particulates, Xu said.
