Two New Zealand companies have lost significant sums of money after two Chinese companies fell victim to internet hackers, the official Xinhua news agency reported Monday. The two unrelated Auckland companies had each placed an order with overseas suppliers in China, the report said, citing New Zealand police. Both companies, which have dealt with the Chinese suppliers for many years, paid into international bank accounts to pay for the orders. In both cases, the suppliers’ e-mail accounts had been hacked, the report said. The crime came to light several weeks later when the Chinese suppliers contacted the New Zealand importers to check on the payment.
