Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has welcomed Beijing’s willingness to have more direct cross-strait communication as a step toward normalized relations, the South China Morning Post reported Tuesday. Ma said such moves exemplify how the two sides do not deny each other’s authority to govern, Taiwanese Presidential Office spokeswoman Garfie Li was quoted as saying. Taiwan sees them as a good beginning for normalizing official relations between the two sides, the report said. Ma was reacting to a meeting between top cross-strait affairs officials on Sunday on the sidelines the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Bali, Indonesia. However, analysts said Beijing likely sees the move as an opportunity to push Taipei closer to controversial political talks, the report said.
