United States Secretary of State John Kerry has assured Chinese Premier Li Keqiang about Washington’s commitment to ending a fiscal impasse that has brought the government to a partial shutdown, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday. Kerry made the assurance after Li raised the issue during a meeting on the sidelines of an Asian summit in Brunei, the report said, citing a senior State Department official. Kerry made clear the US government shutdown, now in its ninth day, and friction over the US budget “is a moment in Washington politics” and reaffirmed President Obama’s commitment to resolving the issue, the report said. China is the biggest holder of US debt and some Chinese officials have raised concern over a drawn-out crisis in Washington. Beijing holds US$1.28 trillion of Treasury debt, official data shows.
