Hershey Co. plans to start selling a line of caramels — its first new brand in 30 years — in the United States early next year after launching the product this year in China, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The new Lancaster brand is the first from Hershey to have its debut outside of the US, the company was quoted as saying. It started selling them in three Chinese cities in June as part of an effort to grow its presence in the mainland where candy is becoming more popular. Sales of chocolate, candies and gum in China climbed 46 percent from 2007 to 2012, topping US$13 billion, market research firm Euromonitor International said. Hershey is aiming to make China its second largest market after the US in the next several years, the report said.
