Fewer firms attend Canton Fair, paper says

The 114th China Import and Export Fair, or Canton Fair, which serves as a barometer of the country’s foreign trade, begins Tuesday with fewer firms attending, mainly because it coincides with the Islamic Corban Festival, also known as Eid al-Adha, the Shanghai Securities News reported Tuesday, citing a trade fair spokesman. According to the organizer’s data, 24,157 domestic and foreign export firms will take part, 229 fewer than the last fair. In all 542 importers will attend, 20 fewer than last time. The fair will also launch a trial scheme to announce the trade amount agreed at the fair in renminbi, the first time in the event’s 57 years, the report said.
