Handset makers told to register programs, paper says

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will require mobile phone makers to apply for approval before they can pre-install software programs in their products, Beijing Business Today reported Tuesday, citing a notice on the MIIT website. Starting next month, phone makers will be banned from installing programs that can collect or change user information without the user’s consent. The move comes after it was discovered that a number of Android mobile phones carry dozens of pre-installed programs that cannot be deleted and result in unauthorized collection of fees and theft of private information, the report said.
