Is China Mobile’s iPhone deal plugged in to 4G licenses?

It’s anybody’s guess when China will issue fourth-generation wireless communication licenses but an eye-catching China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK) poster might offer a clue.

The poster has gone viral online for telling subscribers to wait until November to buy the iPhone 5s or 5c because the TD-LTE-enabled version, based on China Mobile’s homegrown 4G technology, will be available then.

China Mobile, the world’s largest telecom carrier by subscriber base, is the only one of the country’s big-three telcos that still has not partnered up with US smartphone giant Apple. Beijing has vowed to issue 4G network licenses this year so a long-awaited iPhone deal with Apple may be coming just at the right time for China Mobile to get rolling with a 4G launch.
