China cabinet promises information transparency, Xinhua says

The State Council, China’s cabinet, on Tuesday promised to improve information transparency to better respond to people’s concerns and boost the government’s credibility, Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday, citing a circular. The cabinet warned that some local governments have not released information in a timely manner, or even keep silent on important issues, causing public misunderstanding and damage to the government’s image, the report said. Governments at all levels are urged to release information actively, timely and accurately through various of media channels, and to improve the use of spokesperson and official websites. The cabinet also urged them to establish a sound system to respond to public concerns, especially on breaking events or hot issues, and government officials should actively accept online interviews on such issues.
