Drop in visitors on Canton Fair’s first day, report says

Visitor numbers were down by a large margin on the first day of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, a sign that overseas demand remains weak, Economic Information Daily reported Wednesday. Some exporters said orders from emerging markets dropped significantly due to trade barriers and currency depreciation, making the markets loss-makers rather than the growth engines they have been. Despite the weaker-than-expected turnout to the show, exporters were pleased to see more buyers from the United States this year as the country’s economy recovers, the report said.
