Beijing calls for early passage of cross-strait pact, paper says

Beijing expects Taiwan’s parliament to pass the cross-strait service pact as soon as possible, the Economic Daily News reported Thursday, citing a senior government official. Chen Deming {陳德銘}, chairman of the mainland’s Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, said at a meeting in Kunshan on Wednesday that the international financial crisis is not yet over so both sides should improve cooperation on financial oversight to ward off risks. He added that the mainland will offer Taiwan’s financial firms a huge market for development. Also at the meeting, Taiwan Stock Exchange chairman Lee Sush-der called for the mainland to open up its financial market further, the report said.
