Thermal coal price rises for first time in a year, paper says

The benchmark price of thermal coal in the Bohai rim rose in the week ended Tuesday, marking the first increase in almost a year, National Business Daily reported Thursday, citing data from the Qinhuangdao Port’s online trading platform. The average price of 5,500-kilocalorie thermal coal in the period rose by 1 yuan week on week to 531 yuan (US$87.02) per metric ton, rising for the first time since November 7 last year. Nevertheless, some industry insiders think the rise will not last long because the coal sector is still grappling with overcapacity, the report said.
