China is on the verge of issuing fourth-generation (4G) mobile technology licenses, with the final decision made on frequency allocation for carriers, the China Securities Journal reported Friday, citing Ministry of Industry and Information Technology official Dai Xiaohui. The authorities have also determined the direction on research for 5G technology, the report said. Large-scale production of terminals based on homegrown TD-LTE 4G technology is expected to start next year as 4G is commercialized, it said. An unnamed analyst said 5G technology is still at the research and development stage but there should be no big problems commercializing it in 2020.
