Beijing draws up contingency plan on air pollution, paper says

The capital city of Beijing will close all factories and schools and limit the number of motor vehicles on the road when the red alert on air quality is issued, Securities Times reported Friday, citing a contingency plan on heavy air pollution passed by the city’s standing committee. The municipal government will alternate driving days for cars with even- and odd-numbered license plates while 30 percent of government cars will be halted during red-alert days when smog levels reach dangerous levels. The city’s air quality has been the worst among 74 cities since the Ministry of Environmental Protection started to publish regular air quality monitoring reports in April this year, the report said.
