Lightbulbs show potential for fast internet access, report says

Netizens may be able to go online using through signals sent by lightbulbs, instead of WiFi, Xinhua reported Thursday, citing researchers in Shanghai. Fudan University information technology professor Chi Nan said four computers could connect to the internet via light emitted from a one-watt LED lightbulb rather than traditional radio frequencies. A lightbulb with embedded microchips can produce data rates as fast as 150 megabits per second, faster than the average broadband connection in China, the report said.
