Large vessels may be allowed to enter China ports, paper says

The Ministry of Transport may loosen restrictions on large vessels of up to 400,000 tons in deadweight tonnage to enter mainland ports, the Economic Information Daily reported Monday, citing a draft of the policy released recently to solicit public views. Many domestic shippers are worried that a relaxation of the rules will allow iron ore giant Vale SA to ship iron ore to China using its fleet of 400,000-ton vessels and affect cargo rates as the transportation cost using the very large ore carriers is 25 to 30 percent lower than that of 200,000-ton vessels, the report said.
