Beijing education authorities have started soliciting public opinion on a plan to downplay English proficiency in college admission tests, the official Xinhua news agency reported Monday. Starting in 2016, the English portion of the exam will be cut to 100 points from 150 while the total score will remain at 750 points, the report said, citing the Beijing Education Examinations Authority. English exams will be offered twice a year and examinees can take them multiple times and choose their best score for inclusion in the total score. Meanwhile, the points for Chinese-subject exams will increase to 180 from 150 and those for social sciences or natural sciences will rise to 320 from 300.
