China life insurers more promising than foreigners, paper says

China’s 47 life insurers as a whole are better than their foreign peers in operating capability, business potential and risk management, even though they do not perform well in indicators such as net profit and operating income, Shanghai Securities News reported Tuesday, citing a study by the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing. The results were in contrast to general perceptions that domestic life insurers are only concerned with size while their foreign rivals are focused on operating efficiency. In terms of general competitiveness, the top 10 players are all domestic insurers, led by China Life Insurance Co. Ltd. (02628.HK, 601628.CN), the report said.
