The Port of Shenzhen could overtake Hong Kong as the world’s third-busiest port this year as its container traffic continued to surge, the National Business Daily reported Tuesday. The Shenzhen port handled 17.28 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the nine months to September, compared with Hong Kong’s 16.34 million TEUs during the period. If the trend continues into the final quarter, the Shenzhen port will move up from its current No. 4 rank, a place it has been holding for the last decade, overtaking Hong Kong as No. 3. In 2000, Shenzhen’s container traffic was only 3.99 million TEUs a year, ranking it No. 11 in the world, while Hong Kong was then on the top rung with 18.1 million TEUs, the report said.
