Northern steel firms face spot checks over emissions, paper says

The Ministry of Environmental Protection said over 70 percent of the 298 steel companies in the northern China regions have failed to meet emission control standards, in an investigation conducted at the beginning of the year, the China Securities Journal reported Wednesday. Citing Xiong Yaohui, director of the ministry’s technology division, the report said authorities are set to launch a new series of spot checks towards the end of October or early November. According to Xiong, the overall steel production capacity in the northern China regions is around 350 million tons, while the actual production is around 289 million tons.
