The All-China Journalists’ Association is paying close attention to the issue of detention of a reporter of New Express newspaper in Guangzhou by the Changsha police, and has contacted the security authorities to ensure the reporter’s safety, the People’s Daily reported Thursday. The local Public Security Bureau in Changsha in Hunan province announced through its official Sina Weibo account Tuesday that Chen Yongzhou, a journalist with New Express has been put under criminal detention since Saturday for allegedly causing damage to the reputation of a commercial entity, and that the investigation is ongoing. New Express has called for the release of the reporter, and its parent Yangcheng press group has urged that the case be handled under law properly and that normal press supervision should be protected. Chen has published a series of reports criticizing Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Development (000157.CN; 01157.HK), a Changsha-based construction machinery company, for alleged inflation of profit figures and other suspected offences.
