Legislators have expressed concern about the environment in western China, warning it cannot follow the eastern development model which caused serious pollution, the official Xinhua news agency reported Thursday. The western region has received more than 8.5 trillion yuan (US$1.4 trillion) to fund infrastructure development and improve people’s livelihood under the central government’s “Go West” program begun in 2001, the report said. However, legislators are worried development in the vast area will lead to heavy pollution and environmental degradation. The legislators are meeting in Beijing to discuss a government report on the program, among other issues, the report said.
