Bo fails to overturn life sentence, higher court says

Former Communist Party Politburo member Bo Xilai {薄熙來} has failed in his appeal against a life sentence for graft handed down by Shandong’s Jinan Intermediate People’s Court last month, the province’s higher court said in a statement on an official microblog Friday.

The Shandong Provincial Higher People’s Court dismissed on Friday morning Bo’s appeal against his conviction on Sept. 22 for bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power, upholding the lower court’s verdict, according to the statement.

Bo denied all charges during a dramatic five-day trial that ended on Aug. 26.

The court did not say whether Bo can file another appeal.

The Jinan court’s penalty was harsher than the prison term of up to 20 years that observers had been expecting.

The higher court said on Oct. 9 that it had accepted Bo’s appeal for hearing. Shanghai Daily said on Oct. 22 that Bo’s appeal will be heard Friday morning.

Sixty-four-year-old Bo was found guilty of taking 20.44 million yuan (US$3.3 million) in bribes, either personally or through his family members, between 1999 and 2012.
