China to step up household registration overhaul, paper says

The central government will ramp up reform of the decades-old household registration system after next month’s plenary session of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, the China Securities Journal reported Friday, citing an unnamed official. The authorities will improve access to public services for the 160 million migrant workers living in cities and may grant those workers local residency, the report said. Several approaches have been tested in various lower-tier cities and are expected to be rolled out nationwide.
