Chinese No.1 in spending in S Korea duty-free shops, Yonhap says

Chinese visitors to South Korea spent a total of US$863.38 million in Korean duty-free shops in the first seven months of this year, surpassing the US$845.75 million spent by locals for the first time and topping that of visitors from all other nations, Yonhap news agency reported Sunday, citing data from Korea Customs Service. Observers said a weaker Japanese yen, which led to fewer Japanese visitors to South Korea, was part of the reason why Chinese visitors emerged as the largest spenders in Korean duty-free shops. Such spending by Chinese visitors last year was US$1.05 billion, compared to the locals’ US$1.62 billion and the Japanese visitors’ spending of US$665.93 million, the report said.
