Govt to blacklist illegal rare earth miners, paper says

The central government will blacklist local governments and firms for major breaches of rules on the mining of rare earths to eradicate illegal mining and smuggling, National Business Daily reported Monday, citing Jia Yinsong, director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s Rare Earth Office. The authorities will also push for consolidation in the industry as they seek to normalize standards imposed during a three-month crackdown on the sector. Jia told a rare earth forum on Saturday that the authorities seized more than 2,600 metric tons of smuggled rare earths valued at 440 million yuan (US$72.34 million) in 2011 and 2012, the report said.
