Tianjin has ordered 440 heavy-polluting factories to close or halt production so far this year, Xinhua reported late Sunday, citing the city’s environmental protection authority. To curb air pollution, the city will also eliminate 3.69 million metric tons of outdated cement, iron and steel capacity this year. The city expects the rate of emissions per unit of output in key industries, including thermal power and cement, to fall 30 percent by 2017 from levels seen in 2012, the report said. The energy used per unit of output is also expected to fall 20 percent in the same period.
