Beijing issues blue air pollution alert, paper says

Beijing issued the first blue air pollution alert after it launched earlier this month an emergency response plan for the capital city’s heavy smog problem, Beijing Business Today reported Tuesday, citing the local environmental protection authority. The blue alert, the lowest in the four-tier system, indicates heavy air pollution is likely to affect the city the next day. When a red alert, the highest level, is issued, the city will temporarily close primary and middle schools, carry out an odd-even plate number scheme for vehicles allowed on the roads, and implement other mandatory measures to reduce emissions, the report said.
