Nicaraguan canal group visits mainland, SCMP says

A top-level Nicaraguan delegation — headed by the president’s son — traveled to mainland China last week to discuss what could be the world’s largest waterway project, the South China Morning Post reported Tuesday. The delegation of 21 politicians, academics and businessmen was led by Laureano Ortega Murillo and is the first of its kind to go to the mainland since Nicaragua switched diplomatic recognition from Beijing to Taipei in 1990, the report said. The group was hosted by Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Investment, a company established last year to handle a US$40 billion canal project to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through Nicaragua.
