Chinese mobile phone maker Beijing Xiaomi Technology Co. has been given the nod Monday by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic affairs to set up a unit on the island for sales and maintenance business of its phones and accessories, China Times reported Tuesday, citing the ministry’s investment review committee. Xiaomi is however not allowed to set up its own network, equipment facilities or sell servers or core networking equipment in Taiwan. Xiaomi, which marks the first mainland smartphone brand to invest in Taiwan, will put in NT$3.76 million (US$127,916) through Xiaomi H.K. Ltd. as capital investment, the report said.
