Beijing targets full switch to cleaner power by 2017, paper says

Beijing aims to meet all the city’s power needs with cleaner energy in five years from 2013 in a fresh move to fight air pollution, Beijing Daily reported Wednesday, citing a municipal government plan. All coal-fired power plants in the capital will be closed and generators switched to natural gas or alternative energy sources by 2017, it said. To secure gas supply, the city will step up the construction of pipelines to import the fuel from Shaanxi and Tangshan in Hebei, with gas supply expected to exceed 93 billion cubic meters in Beijing by 2017, according to the report.
