The Chinese government has tightened rules on producers of infant formula to promote the use of breast feeding, Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday, citing a notice released jointly by the Food and Drug Administration, the health ministry and the State Administration of Industry and Commerce. Under new rules, pictures of children should not be used on infant formula packaging and baby formula makers will be barred from promoting their products in hospitals. Also, hospitals and other medical facilities are prohibited from receiving gifts, kickbacks or other inducements from formula companies. Entities which violate the rules will be subject to severe punishment, according to the report.
