China’s State Oceanic Administration has started an island restoration plan that involves total investment of more than 10 billion yuan (US$1.63 billion) in the next five years, according to information posted on the government’s website Wednesday. The initiative comes as extensive development has caused damage to natural resources at many islands. The new restoration plan will see related projects divided into national and provincial level ones, with the government giving preference to the national level projects. Restoration projects have already been started in several coastal provinces including Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, the government said.
