Dianping.com, a restaurant review website, will report to the police that it has been deceived by an unnamed counterparty into selling non-existing McDonald’s promotional meals, resulting in a loss of 2.2 million yuan (US$359,420) to the website, Shanghai Daily reported on Wednesday. The Shanghai-based company sold the McDonald’s coupons for 9.90 yuan each with the promise that they could be exchanged for a meal set valued at 19.50 yuan in more than 700 outlets of the fast-food chain across the country, according to the newspaper. McDonald’s on Monday afternoon denied any collaboration with websites or businesses for such a deal, but by then at least 226,329 digital coupons had been sold already, the report said. McDonald’s will submit a separate report to the police about the case, it added.
