Taiwan reaps US$4 bln from auction of 4G licenses, paper says

The combined amount of winning bids for Taiwan’s 4G licenses reached NT$118.65 billion (US$4.02 billion) after 40 days of bidding, more than triple the NT$35.9 billion starting prices, United Daily News reported Thursday, citing the results of the auctions released by the island’s National Communications Commission on Wednesday. Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan’s biggest telecommunication carrier, won three of the 12 frequency bands put up for bidding for NT$39 billion and became the biggest winner. The company’s chairman Lee Yen-sung was quoted as saying it expects to launch 4G services as soon as the second half of 2014.
