More than 1,000 workers staged a protest outside the premises of Shenzhen ASM Micro Electronic Technology in the southern Chinese city Thursday, demanding better compensation terms amid a factory relocation plan, the South China Morning Post reported Friday. The largely peaceful demonstration by workers drew dozens of police officers to the plants, where management shut the gates in an attempt to keep the situation from deteriorating, it said. The protest was aimed at drawing attention to what some workers felt was inadequate compensation offered to those facing redundancy as part of the factory’s move away from the area, the paper said. The firm, a unit of Hong Kong-listed ASM Pacific Technology, is involved in making machines and tools used in the semiconductor industry.
