Landmark coal-to-gas project passes first tests, Xinhua says

The first phase of a coal gasification project in north China has been completed and will start to supply gas to Beijing at the end of this year, Xinhua reported Thursday, citing project officials. The first phase of the project in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, is ready for production and work is under way on the last 100 kilometer section of a pipeline from Chifeng to Miyun County in Beijing, the report said. When all three phases start full production next year, the project will be able to supply Beijing with 4 billion cubic meters of natural gas, or nearly half of the capital’s annual gas demand.
