China’s aged population to exceed 300 mln by 2025, paper says

China has the world’s biggest population of aged people at more than 200 million this year, China Securities Journal reported Sunday, citing remarks by Civil Affairs Minister Li Liguo {李立國}, who is also deputy director of the China National Committee on Ageing. The nation’s elderly population is expected to exceed 300 million by 2025 and 400 million by 2034, Li said. Meanwhile, Li Wei, director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, said the country faces more challenges than developed countries when it comes to its aging population as most Chinese people have yet to become prosperous before getting old, the report said.
