The government has begun a trial scheme on public rental housing, Chongqing Times reported Sunday, citing unnamed sources. It involves the gradual phaseout of low-cost, for-sale houses and turning them into rental units, the report said. The scheme has been implemented in Zhengzhou, Henan province, and Yantai, Shandong province. Meanwhile, a similar pilot program combines existing public housing with a subsidiary rental scheme in several key cities including Shanghai, Hefei and Shijiazhuang, the report said.
