Hainan sees surge in duty-free shopping, report says

Sales at duty-free stores in South China’s Hainan province rose 62 percent year on year to 3.19 billion yuan (US$523.8 million) in the first 10 months of the year, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday, citing data from the local customs bureau. At least 1.09 million tourists bought 4.31 million items from the two offshore duty-free stores in the provincial capital of Haikou and the resort city of Sanya, the report said. During the Spring Festival in February, sales in the two stores surged 95 percent to 170 million yuan from a year earlier, it said.
