Tongling woos migrants to ensure worker supply, SCMP says

Tongling, an old copper-mining center along the Yangtze River, is offering a package of incentives for migrants and their families to settle in the city as part of efforts to ensure a steady supply of workers and transform itself into a manufacturing hub, the South China Morning Post reported Sunday. Migrants are given the same rights to education, health care and housing as locals, and even exempted from the one-child policy so they can have a second child, according to the newspaper. As a result of the city’s reform of its hukou or household registration system, its population is growing — while overall Anhui province’s is falling — and the local economy is getting a small boost, the report said.
