Chinese enrollments in US colleges up 21.4%, paper says

China continues to send more students to universities and colleges in the United States than any other nation, China Daily said on Tuesday, citing the latest report of the Institute of International Education. For the 2012/13 academic year, Chinese student enrollments in the US increased 21.4 percent to more than 235,000, according to the institute’s 2013 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, released on Monday. Of all international students in the US, 28.7 percent were from China, and the number of undergraduate students from China rose 26 percent from the previous year, the report said. Educational consultants were quoted as saying that the number of Chinese students pursuing undergraduate courses in the US has increased dramatically mainly because of rising household incomes in China, as the cost of a four-year education in the US is more than 1 million yuan (US$163,000), the report said.
