Taiwan eyes cross-strait currency swap deal mid-2014, paper says

Taiwan’s central bank will do its best to sign a cross-strait currency swap agreement with its mainland counterpart by the middle of next year as negotiations are continuing, United Evening News cited the bank’s governor Perng Fai-nan as saying Monday. He made the remarks in response to a query by a lawmaker who had pointed out that mainland officials had said that an agreement is unlikely by the year-end as more time is needed for the negotiations. According to Perng, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Wu Po-hsiung, honorary chairman of Taiwan’s ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, had agreed to conduct negotiations before year-end when they met earlier this year.
